Perfumed Garden

Fire & Blood

The Perfumed Garden was a Rogare family estate in Lys, associated with Lysandro the Magnificent and later caught up in the ruin that followed the collapse of the Rogare Bank. Once a place where his granddaughters had played as children, it became a confiscated property and a stark measure of how completely the family lost its wealth and standing.

Setting and association

The Perfumed Garden belonged to the world Lysandro had built around his power in Lys. The text distinguishes it from the palace he had bequeathed to his daughter Lysara: Lysandro was travelling from the Garden to that palace when his barge sank, and the estate later became the focus of a separate attempt to sell it. The Garden thus appears not simply as a residence, but as one of the valuable properties and possessions bound up with the Rogares’ fortunes.

Seizure and reversal

After the Rogare Bank collapsed, the magisters seized the Garden. Fredo Rogare was still trying to sell it when they took possession, a reversal that left the family unable to control even the sale of its own property. The confiscation accompanied the seizure of the palace and the manses of Lysandro’s other children, along with their furnishings; elsewhere, the family’s ships and storehouses were also lost as debts overwhelmed the estate.

The Garden after the Rogare fall

The Garden’s history closes on an especially severe contrast. The daughters of Fredo and Lysaro Rogare were brought back to the place where they had played as children, but no longer as members of the family that owned it. They had been sold into slavery with their relatives, and the Garden had passed into other hands. Its changed meaning—from a setting of childhood to a visible part of the family’s dispossession—makes the Rogare collapse legible through one particular place.
